Spring 2023. Spirit & Matter

I am starting to paint after a long stretch of focusing on sculpture -and music. Standing in front of the canvas again has been a curious adventure. My experience has been that we fail to notice the changes in ourselves because we are living in it and it feels slow, almost imperceptible.

Picking up the paintbrush and watching these mythical images emerge while observing the evolution in these paintings has been quite revealing, I feel that I am in a sense, a different person. It is a remarkable reflection, as if my internal world has moved on without me, and now I must catch up. This visual awareness of the efficacy of time on the psyche is fascinating. We are meant to evolve and change, but it has been confronting to see it in front of oneself so plainly!

We have all been through a profoundly transformative few years globally and I am certain that expression is crucial, now more than ever.  I often urge students, friends, and family to find a mode of expression to work through trauma. No matter how great or small, we have experienced so much in the past 3 years. It is clear to see this as we observe the political & social landscapes, but what is it really for us internally? Are we making others responsible to avoid addressing something deeper inside of ourselves?

I hope these new works are of inspiration to you. Spring is here, and it does bring about the stirring of our worlds, and a fresh perspective. I am excited about my upcoming exhibitions. You can learn more about the work as I contribute more to this Blog as this body of work develops.

I hope you can join us in viewing my newest works at Gambrel Gallery in Ashland,  Oregon May 25-July 8. The opening reception will be June 2nd, 5-8pm. Gambrel is run by our friends, Emily & Chris who have been developed a unique space into a contemporary art gallery. In September, I will be having a solo exhibition at Orbit ArtSpace Gallery in Fruita, CO, which is a gorgeous, spacious gallery. The opening will be Friday, September 1. On Saturday, September  2,  Jeff Pevar and I will be performing a concert in the gallery, playing our original music!

If you are in the Bay Area, I have sculptures on display at Bryant Street Gallery, downtown Palo Alto, CA.
